China to further contribute to global economic recovery, prosperity

Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Wednesday that China is determined to make greater contributions to global economic recovery and prosperity by sharing its own development opportunities with the world.

Li made the remarks in his speech at the Virtual G20 Leaders’ Summit, which was chaired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The summit aimed to discuss the implementation of the leaders’ declaration made at the 18th G20 Summit in New Delhi, share views and enhance cooperation on critical challenges.

High priority to development cooperation

Li called on the G20 members to give high priority to development cooperation to achieve robust, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth of the world economy and oppose the politicization of development issues.

Created in 1999, the G20 is a leading forum for international cooperation, comprising 19 countries plus the European Union and the African Union (AU). It works to address major issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation and sustainable development.

At September’s summit in New Delhi, members vowed to jointly address current global crises with unity and cooperation. They also granted permanent member status to the AU, reflecting the growing importance they attach to the Global South.

More practical measures should be taken to implement the consensus reached at this year’s G20 Summit to gain more tangible results, Li noted in Wednesday’s speech.

Echoing his previous remarks at the summit in September stressing increased representation for developing countries in international affairs, Li said that it is necessary to coordinate and cooperate more closely, revitalize multilateralism, and “pay more attention to the concerns of developing countries in the reform of the World Trade Organization and the International Monetary Fund.”

China to further contribute to world economic recovery

Noting all G20 members should take the responsibility inherent in being major international and regional players, Li said that China stands ready to work with all parties to uphold the original aspiration of cooperation, respond to the call of the times, and forge ahead to create a better future for humanity.

The promise has been proven by China with practical actions.

In October, the country hosted the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, during which a total of 458 outcomes were delivered, ranging from a series of international cooperation initiatives to pragmatic cooperation projects and bilateral cooperation agreements among relevant national governments, financial institutions, sub-national governments and enterprises.

Earlier this month, the sixth China International Import Expo, the world’s first national-level import-themed expo, was concluded in Shanghai. It saw a record $78.41 billion worth of tentative deals reached for one-year purchases of goods and services.

China has demonstrated its firm determination to promote high-level opening up and to share development opportunities with the world, Li pointed out in the speech.

The country will continue to work with all parties in an open and inclusive manner to make greater contribution to world economic recovery and global development and prosperity, said the Chinese premier.
