China hopes the Japanese side can properly handle the issue of the discharge of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated wastewater into sea, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday.
Spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks at a regular press conference in response to a question that when the expert-level talks will be held to address China’s ban on Japanese seafood.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had said China has agreed to hold expert-level talks aimed at resolving China’s ban on seafood from Japan.
“We hope the Japanese side can work with China to properly handle the issue of the release of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated wastewater in a constructive way,” Mao said.
“China’s position against the discharge of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated wastewater is consistent and clear-cut,” said Mao, adding that “China and other relevant parties have taken some necessary measures, which are fully justified and necessary.”
China suspended the imports of all aquatic products originating from Japan in August to prevent risks from Japan’s discharge of nuclear-contaminated wastewater.
