How football minnows Brighton cliched a historic first win in Europe

The illustrious Dutch powerhouse Ajax boast an impressive record of winning the European Cup four times. On the other hand, Brighton, a relatively obscure side that operated under the radar for over three decades, only recently made their mark by earning a spot in the Europa League this season. However, on this particular night, there was no doubt as to which team delivered a masterclass.

After a disappointing loss in their opening group game at home against AEK Athens and a subsequent draw against Marseille, Brighton had a thrilling and unforgettable night at their Amex Stadium on Thursday night. With goals from Joao Pedro and Ansu Fati, they clinched their historic first-ever win in European football. 

The situation was quite different for their opponents, who find themselves at an unprecedented low point in their own history. Ajax, currently languishing near the bottom of their domestic league table, have endured their worst start to a season ever. 

In an attempt to stifle their opponents, Ajax resorted to a defensive approach, opting to sit deep and frustrate Brighton. Witnessing seasoned European veterans struggle to contain a Brighton side that dominated possession served as a poignant reminder of the shifting landscape.

The Europa League was anticipated to provide Ajax with some relief, having accumulated two hard-fought points prior to this match. However, as the game approached its final stages, there was not only a noticeable absence of beautiful football but also a lack of fighting spirit from Ajax. The stark contrast between the two teams was evident in how effortlessly Brighton carried out their game.

According to statistics provided by Opta, Brighton impressively completed nearly twice as many passes as their opponents. Showing great precision, Brighton skillfully maneuvered through the compacted defense. The dynamic Japanese talent, Kaoru Mitoma, made a decisive move, cutting inside and unleashing a powerful shot that was initially saved but then finished by Pedro. From that point onwards, the home team’s confidence soared, and Fati’s exceptional goal in the second half sealed the victory.

Expertly receiving a superb pass from Simon Adingra, the Barcelona loanee showcased his skill by taking two touches inside the penalty area. With finesse and accuracy, he placed the ball perfectly into the corner of the net, triggering jubilant celebrations among the Brighton fans.  

“Ajax is a very big club who taught all of us to play football and to beat them playing in the way they taught us is a big, big step,” said Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi. “It is a great day for our fans, our club, our owner and we are very proud to give them this day.” 

Following their historic win, Brighton’s attention now shifts to their upcoming trip to Amsterdam for the return leg. However, De Zerbi, ever focused, has already set his sights on their next Premier League opponents, Fulham. “I think we showed an important mentality but the challenge is that I am thinking about Fulham because we have to arrive on Sunday with the same passion, same motivation and attitude,” he said. 

With a clear focus on maintaining their momentum in the domestic league, Brighton will surely be looking to carry their winning form into the English topflight.
