A shooter opened fire in a school in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Monday, killing one pupil and leaving three others wounded, authorities said.

The shooter, a teenage boy who attended the school in the eastern Sapopemba neighbourhood, opened fire at point-blank range, killing a 15-year-old girl, Brazilian media reports said.

Two other pupils were shot and wounded, while a third was injured while fleeing the attack, the Sao Paulo state government said in a statement.

Police have arrested the shooter, it said.

Officials did not immediately give details on the condition of the wounded victims, who were being treated at a local hospital.

Brazil has seen an increase in school attacks recently.

Earlier this month, a former pupil stabbed four teenagers, killing one, as they left school in the southeastern city of Pocos de Caldas.

In April, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s administration announced a series of measures to increase security at schools and tackle content seen as promoting school violence on social media.
