Attack on Chinese nationals near Karachi airport leaves 2 dead, 10 injured

At least two people were killed and 10 injured in an explosion near the international airport of the southern Pakistani city of Karachi on Sunday night, local broadcaster Geo News reported. A Home Ministry official said it was an attack on Chinese nationals.

Separatist militant group the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) said in a statement that it had “targeted a high-level convoy of Chinese engineers and investors” coming from Karachi’s airport.

The regional government of southern Sindh province said on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, that a “tanker” had exploded on the airport motorway.

In a statement emailed to journalists, BLA claimed the explosion was an attack carried out by them using a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device targeting Chinese nationals, including engineers.

Karachi police did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Videos showed flames engulfing cars and a thick column of smoke rising from the scene. There was a heavy military deployment at the site, which was cordoned off.

Police surgeon Dr Sumayya Tariq said one of the casualties was in critical condition and that four of them were security guards.
