Implementation of ILO Convention on elimination of violence and harassment in workplace discussed in Bishkek

AKIPRESS.COM – A conference aimed at promoting and practical implementation of the International Labor Organization’s Convention NO.190 on elimination of violence and harassment in workplace has been held in Bishkek on October 2.

The event was attended by members of the Kyrgyz Parliament, Regional Director of the Solidarity Center for Europe and Central Asia Rudy Porter, representative of the international organizations and the civil society, the Ministry of Labor reported.

Minister of Labor, Social Security and Migration of Kyrgyzstan Jyldyz Polotova stressed the importance of taking preventive measures and creation of safe work conditions for all workers.

“Every worker has the right to work in the conditions free from violence, threats and harassment regardless pf gender, age, race or social status,” she said.

Polotova noted the need of cooperation between the government bodies, employers and trade unions for providing a full protection of labor rights.

“The ILO Convention 190 is a crucial instrument for the protection of workers’ rights, and our task is not only to ratify this document, but also to actively implement its provisions in national laws and regulations as well as in the daily practice of organizations. This requires the coordinated work of government, employers, trade unions and civil society,” the Minister said.

During the discussions, steps were proposed to adapt the legislation of the Kyrgyz Republic to the requirements of Convention 190. Specifically, the project focused on introducing gender policies in enterprises, establishing complaint mechanisms and strengthening the role of unions in protecting workers’ rights.

The conference participants made proposals for implementing the Convention’s provisions into national legislation and agreed on the importance of expediting the adoption of the law in line with the ILO Convention No. 190, for protection of labor rights and improvement of social justice in the country.
