Why President Xi visited this Shanghai neighborhood

What does people-centered urban renewal actually look like?

During his inspection tour in Shanghai on July 15, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited a residential neighborhood and called for urban renewal that responds to people’s needs and improves their daily lives.

But why this community? And what has changed here?

CGTN visited the neighborhood and met Xu Yinghe, a longtime resident who has lived here for most of his life.

Xu recalled that ten families once shared a single toilet, and residents had no private kitchens or bathrooms. But life changed dramatically after a major urban renewal project transformed the community.

“A good home doesn’t have to be luxurious. What matters most is whether it makes life easier for ordinary people,” Xu said.
