A landslide struck a section of road in Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County, southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality, early on Friday morning, trapping an unknown number of people and damaging nearby buildings, local authorities said.

Nine trapped people have been rescued and taken to hospital, China Media Group reported, and rescue operations are ongoing. Nearby residents have been safely relocated.

China’s Ministry of Emergency Management has dispatched 100 personnel to the affected area, while 206 firefighters have also been deployed to assist with rescue efforts.

A total of 8,000 pieces of relief supplies, including tents, folding beds, blankets and emergency kits, have been allocated to support rescue efforts and the resettlement of affected residents.
