Islamabad: Towards building smart campus by using renewable energy technologies, a Chinese enterprise and Bahria University, Pakistan’s leading university, have held talks to expand cooperation in areas of green and clean energies, sustainable environmental protection.

According to official sources, a delegation from Shandong Haizhichen New Energy Technology, China, a subsidiary of Shandong Energy Group Co. Ltd. (SDE), visited Bahria University, a leading university of Pakistan located in Islamabad, on Thursday, to discuss potential cooperation in the fields of research, innovation, and renewable energy technologies.
Smart campuses integrate technology to create green futures by using intelligent systems for energy efficiency, waste reduction, and sustainable transportation. They use data and automation to optimize resource consumption, implement renewable energy like solar and geothermal, and encourage practices like recycling, composting, and electric vehicle use. This approach not only lowers the campus’s environmental impact but also serves as an educational model for students to learn about and apply sustainability principles.
Smart technologies for a greener campus are based on energy efficiency and use sensors in lighting and HVAC systems, can automatically adjust energy use based on occupancy, reducing waste.
By installing renewable energy systems, campuses can install solar panels, wind turbines, and geothermal systems to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and generate clean electricity on-site.
Smart campuses include waste management: Smart campuses can use technology to support zero-waste goals through initiatives like automated alerts for waste collection, promoting digital alternatives to paper, and enabling efficient recycling and composting programs.
Also, smart campus initiatives can include supporting electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, managing parking to reduce congestion, and integrating public transport and bike-sharing programs.
While A central digital platform can integrate all smart technologies to optimize energy performance and manage a campus-wide smart grid, which helps in managing and reducing electricity costs.
Similarly, advanced systems can create a digital twin of the campus to monitor environmental impact and use “green metrics” to measure and improve sustainability efforts.
In China, the development of smart campuses is being driven by ambitious national green building targets and increasing sustainability awareness at universities. China’s efforts have evolved from a focus on basic energy conservation to an integrated approach that leverages modern technology like IoT and AI to manage resources more intelligently.
This sustainability initiative Chinese enterprise and Bahria University can improve efficiency system, showing commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainability, besides creating smart, innovative campuses for a sustainable future.

This engagement reflects Bahria University’s commitment to building international partnerships, advancing research capacity, and promoting sustainable development goals through academia–industry linkages. The collaboration aims to open new avenues for student internships, joint research projects, and knowledge exchange in the rapidly growing energy sector.
