Rarely has an athlete aroused such epic fascination as Yuzuru Hanyu.
The illustrious figure skater, lovingly referred to as “Japan’s Ice Prince,” has stolen the hearts of many around the world. Admired not only for his graceful appearance and amiable demeanor, but also for his flawless performances on the ice, Hanyu has become an icon.
He has etched his name in the annals of the sport by shattering world records a staggering 19 times. He has triumphed on the grandest stages. He claimed the coveted gold medal at both the Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018 Games, solidifying his status as a true champion.
Wherever he goes, Hanyu effortlessly commands attention, drawing massive crowds and enchanting them with his magnetic presence. The winsome connection between Hanyu and the beloved Disney character, Winnie the Pooh, has further endeared him to fans. It is a delightful sight to behold as adoring spectators shower him with Pooh Bear plush toys after each of his mesmerizing routines.

Yet, despite Hanyu’s exemplary skill in executing complex jumps and spins on the ice, there is one crucial maneuver that he has yet to accomplish successfully: the transition to marriage.
Just as 2023 seemed to be reaching its nadir, we were confronted with the demise of love on Friday night when reports surfaced that Hanyu had announced his divorce a mere three months after his marriage had been made public.
“In contemplating my future, I made the difficult decision to pursue a divorce, driven by my desire for my partner’s happiness and her freedom from any constraints,” said Hanyu in a statement shared on X. The figure skater chose not to disclose the identity of his partner, emphasizing that she is not a public figure.
Hanyu revealed that both his partner and their families, as well as their acquaintances, have endured distressing incidents of stalking, defamation and intrusive coverage attempts by multiple media outlets exploiting these actions as their basis for reporting.
“I have entered into a marriage with a non-public figure. Our union was founded on a deep commitment to honor and cherish one another. Together, we have confronted numerous challenges, striving to safeguard each other along the way. Despite the limitations imposed on her, my partner has offered unwavering support, even when confined to the confines of our home for extended periods of time,” he elaborated.

“Regrettably, even within the sanctuary of our living space, we have experienced unsettling encounters with suspicious individuals and vehicles, or unwarranted confrontations. We have endeavored to shield one another from these circumstances, despite our concerns. However, due to my own immaturity, it has become increasingly arduous and unbearable to ensure the safety and well-being of both my partner and myself in our present circumstances.”
“Moving forward, I kindly request that all forms of slander, unauthorized interviews, reporting, or any other intrusive behaviors directed towards my partner, who is a private individual, her family members, associates, as well as my own relatives and associates, cease immediately,” he further expressed. “I sincerely implore you to adhere to this request. I remain committed to forging ahead and I deeply appreciate your ongoing support.”
The unexpected news sent shockwaves through the figure skating community and sparked a wave of contemplation on whether the media has crossed a line. Many internet users questioned if certain media outlets have gone too far in their pursuit of sensationalism. Fans, in particular, directed blame towards tabloids, highlighting their possible role in the difficulties in Hanyu’s personal life.

“The media seems to have completely lost its sense of decency. It’s high time we started respecting the need for public figures to have their own personal space and privacy,” said a devoted fan on social media.
Another fan added, “Regardless of the circumstances, nothing can alter the fact that Hanyu are a great person…I will place unwavering trust in him, and I will support him wholeheartedly.”
Perhaps, in the depths of desolation, the unwavering support of Hanyu’s fans will emerge as the ultimate catalyst for his resilience, inspiring the 28-year-old to press on against all odds.
