Tanzania moves to cut dependence on hydropower generation

Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said Wednesday that the government is taking measures aimed at reducing dependence on hydropower generation which is unreliable due to climate change.

Speaking at the 5th Tanzania Energy Congress in Dar es Salaam, Majaliwa said the government was taking deliberate measures to invest heavily in renewable energy. He said power generation using hydropower dams was declining because water in the dam reservoirs had dropped because of prolonged dry spells caused by climate change.

“The government intends to diversify energy sources by venturing into solar and wind energy generation using available natural resources,” said Majaliwa, stressing that Tanzania is endowed with natural resources that are suitable for energy production.

He added that the government has put in place policies that will broaden investments in the energy sector to stimulate economic growth.
