Sun Yingsha progresses toward women's singles title at WTT China Smash

Top seed Sun Yingsha of China advanced to the women’s singles quarterfinals at the World Table Tennis (WTT) China Smash in Beijing after beating her compatriot Liu Weishan 11-4, 11-5, 4-11, 11-2 on Thursday.

“We are very familiar with each other and we both played with good form,” Sun told reporters after the match. “Liu Weishan has shown her style too. As the competition goes on, the matches will be closer. I will do my best in every battle.”

Sun’s opponent in the last eight will be sixth-seeded Mima Ito of Japan, who knocked out Kim Na-yeong in five games 11-7, 6-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9.

Chinese qualifier Fan Siqi defeated Sakura Mori of Japan 11-6, 14-12, 11-5 in the round of 16. She will play No. 7 seed Cheng I-Ching of Chinese Taipei next. Cheng came back to beat home qualifier Wang Xiaotong 11-13, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8 in her last match.

Fourth-seeded Chen Xingtong of China knocked out her compatriot Chen Yi in a sweeping win 11-7, 11-9, 11-3 and will compete with Suh Hyo-won of South Korea for a spot in the semifinals.

Wildcard player He Zhuojia of China, one of the darkest horses of the tournament, will challenge No. 2 seed Wang Manyu in Friday’s quarterfinals. They will extend the “Chinese series” of their section. He defeated home wildcard Zong Geman 11-8, 11-9, 11-7; Wang knocked out her compatriot Qin Yuxuan in three games 11-9, 11-5, 11-4.
