Typhoon Krathon leaves 2 dead, 102 injured in Taiwan region

Typhoon Krathon had caused two deaths and 102 injuries in China’s Taiwan region as of Wednesday evening, according to the local emergency operation department, and two people were reported missing.

The number of red alerts for mudslides in Taitung County and Pingtung County increased to 44, and the number of roads closed across Taiwan as a precaution reached 21. Additionally, 99 international and cross-Straits flights in Taiwan are expected to be canceled, and all local flights have been grounded. Regarding maritime transportation, four cross-Straits routes and 30 voyages have been suspended, and all 10 routes and 131 voyages within the island have been canceled.

As of the evening of Wednesday, a cumulative total of 58,109 households on the island had experienced power outages, and 3,490 households were still without power. Relevant departments are continuing restoration efforts.

According to China’s National Meteorological Center, Krathon was centered northeast of the South China Sea on Wednesday morning, about 125 kilometers southwest of Kaohsiung City in Taiwan. The maximum wind speed near its center reached 48 meters per second, equivalent to a level-15 gale.

Typhoon Krathon is expected to move northeastward at 5 to 10 kilometers per hour and is forecast to make landfall on the southwestern coast of Taiwan between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. 

East China’s Fujian Province has announced the suspension of most of its passenger ferry services due to storms triggered by Krathon, said local maritime authorities.
