The head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) has said that some 22,264 passenger cars were cleared from Iranian customs and entered into the country in the six calendar months to September 21.
Mohammad Rezvanifar said that the value of the cars imported to the country in the six-month period stood at more than $438 million.
He put the number of cars imported into Iran in last year’s corresponding period at as low as 1,736.
Iran’s Guardian Council approved a parliament law last year that allowed unlimited imports of brand-new and second-hand cars into the country amid efforts by the administration of former president Ebrahim Raisi to contain rampant prices of the domestically-produced cars.
In mid-July, Abbas Aliabadi who then served as Iran’s minister of industry, said that the country’s car output was expected to reach 1.7 million units in the current calendar year which ends on March 20, 2025.
