Iran’s electricity consumption up 9% amid scorching heat: Energy minister

Iran’s Minister of Energy Ali-Akbar Mehrabian has said that unprecedented heat has caused a 9% rise in the country’s electricity consumption as summer heat has reached record levels.

9% of 80,000 megawatts equals as much as 7,000 megawatts which would require $7 billion worth of investment in the power plant industry, the minister said on Monday.

He said that the authorities expected a maximum 6% surge in electricity consumption at the worst scenario while the country faced with a 9% increase in demand.

Iranian government has cut the working hours of state organizations and banks for tomorrow, Tuesday, and even announced a day off to prevent power outages amid rising heat last week.
