Four generations of erhu players bond over melodies

Can young and old people share the same interest? For the Qian family living in Wuxi’s Meicun in Jiangsu Province, it’s the erhu, a traditional Chinese musical instrument that binds their four generations together.

The family’s love of the erhu can be traced back to 90-year-old Qian Fuji’s childhood. Now his 8-year-old great-grandson Qian Zhichen also took an interest in the instrument and joined in to play.

Often known by Westerners as the Chinese violin, the erhu – a two-stringed, bowed instrument – is very popular across China. Check out Qian family’s melodic life stories and how they bond and resonate with the erhu.
