Beijing meets Paris: 'Water Cube' and Aquatics Centre

The Olympic Games are underway in Paris, marking the first time in a century that the French capital has welcomed the world’s finest athletes for the Summer Games.

With most events taking place in or around Paris’ iconic landmarks, many venues existed predating the Games, complemented by various temporary arenas and stands. Among the few new sports facilities is the Aquatics Centre built for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Located in the Saint-Denis neighborhood of Paris’s northern suburbs, this newly-constructed, eco-friendly venue is hosting the world’s top athletes for artistic swimming, water polo, and diving events.

According to current reports, the Aquatics Centre boasts a multifunctional side. Starting in July 2025, it will become a vast multi-sports facility open to all, featuring two pools, a fitness area, a bouldering wall, a paddle tennis section, and pitches for team sports.

The Olympic legacy is a frequently discussed topic. In China, the National Aquatic Centre, known as the “Water Cube,” was built for the swimming, diving, and synchronized swimming competitions of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

It has since become a landmark of Beijing, hosting national and international events while remaining open to the public.

In 2022, Beijing dazzled again as the world’s first dual Olympic city, hosting both the 2008 Summer and 2022 Winter Olympics. The “Water Cube” was transformed into the “Ice Cube” to serve as a venue for curling competitions.
