Middle East's port welcomes China's green car vessel "Min Jiang Kou"

A grand ceremony was held in Dubai on Wednesday as Cosco Shipping’s newest RoRo vessel was welcomed by DP World at Jebel Ali Port for its maiden voyage in the Middle East.

The vessel departed from Shanghai on July 13 and successfully reached Dubai on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in its operations in the Gulf region.

The “Min Jiang Kou” boasts a remarkable capacity of 7,500 car units, making it one of the largest RoRo vessels globally. Measuring 199.9 meters in length and 38 meters in width, the vessel features 13 decks, four of which are adjustable, allowing for versatile cargo options. It is equipped to handle a wide range of roll-on/roll-off cargo, including passenger vehicles, buses, trucks, construction machinery, and new energy vehicles.

The vessel’s advanced features also include real-time monitoring and precise positioning of the vehicles, providing a visualized experience of the entire logistics supply chain.

Meanwhile, the ship’s design incorporates advanced green technologies, significantly reducing carbon and pollutant emissions by over 25 percent compared to traditional fuel vessels.

The maiden voyage of the “Min Jiang Kou” marks a significant step in enhancing China’s export capacity and establishing a global automotive logistics supply chain, Zhang Zhanhao, operational director of COSCO Shipping Car Carriers, told CGTN.

“This milestone provides crucial support for the international expansion of Chinese automobiles,” he said.

On this journey, the “Min Jiang Kou” carried nearly 4,900 vehicles from over ten Chinese brands, which were offloaded at Jebel Ali Port, with some being further transported to Dammam Port.

China’s automotive industry has been expanding rapidly into the Middle Eastern market. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, the UAE ranked as the ninth-largest market for Chinese vehicle exports in 2023.
