Tehran: Iran’s newly elected Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday assured the visiting Chinese envoy in Tehran to continue to grow cooperation partnership with China, and vowed to complete the “Road Belt” project along with the 25-year cooperation plan signed between Iran and China.
“China is a strategic partner in the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian made these remarks on Wednesday during his meeting with Peng Qinghua, Chinese president’s Special Envoy and Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, who traveled to Tehran to participate in the swearing-in ceremony of the fourteenth term of Iran’s presidency.
As the vital countries along the ancient Silk Road, China and Iran have strengthened their multilateral cooperation under the frameworks of Belt and Road Initiative and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Highlighting the historic China and Iran cooperation partnership, President Pezeshkian stated “China has always been a friend of Iran during difficult times and we will not forget Beijing’s help to deal with the American sanctions”.
Commenting on cooperation agreements signed with China, Pezeshkian emphasized the implementation of the agreements between the two countries as soon as possible, especially on the two important issues of completing the “Road Belt” grand project and the 25-year cooperation plan between the two countries.
Lauding China’s constructive diplomacy in West Asia, President of Iran stated “while the United States seeks to continue war and insecurity in our region to sell weapons, the actions of the Chinese government to maintain peace and stability by resolving the differences of the countries in the region are commendable”.
On the impact of recent geopolitical tensions on Iran, and West Asia, especially the assassination of Martyr Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, President said that “the Zionist regime and its supporters are seeking to spread tension and the continuation of unrest in the region”, he pointed to China’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council and asked the government of this country to use all its capacities to condemn the crimes of the Zionist regime.
In his remarks, the special envoy of the Chinese President Xi Jinping, Peng Qinghua, congratulated President Pezeshkian, and conveyed the greetings and good wishes of the Chinese President for the success of Pezeshkian in the presidential term, and considered Iran as an important country in the region and a strategic partner for China.
Peng Qinghua, the special envoy of China further stated “China attaches great importance to relations with Iran and wants to develop these relations as much as possible”.
Highlighting the China and Iran cooperation, Peng Qinghua also added by stating “Iran and China have always supported each other in international developments, and this mutual support has been the basis of cooperation, providing the interests of both countries and guaranteeing peace and stability in the region”.
He also appreciated the response of Pezeshkian to the congratulatory message of the President of China and the adoption of promising positions in the development of cooperation between the two countries.
Additionally, the Vice Chairman of the National People’s Congress of China emphasized the readiness of his country to implement the 25-year program of cooperation and promote economic, political, social, and cultural cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and added that China also supports Iran’s role in regional and global developments.
Talking about the assassination of Martyr Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, Chinese envoy Peng Qinghua stated that China firmly condemns the assassination of the head of the political office of Hamas and emphasizes the necessity of observing international principles and respecting Iran’s territorial sovereignty”
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Special Envoy Peng Qinghua arrived in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran on July 30, at the invitation of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning announced Friday.
Peng is also vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.
China responded positively and assured the new administration under the leadership of president Pezeshkian to continue the growing trend of relations with Iran.
The Spokesman of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Lin Jian said:
“China and Iran enjoy a long history of friendly exchanges, and the bilateral relations have maintained sound and steady development since the establishment of diplomatic ties more than half a century ago. In the face of complex regional and international situations, China and Iran have always supported each other and worked together to consolidate strategic mutual trust, steadily promoted exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and maintained sound communication and coordination on regional and international affairs. This has not only benefited the Chinese and Iranian people, but also contributed to regional and world peace and stability”
The trade volume between Iran and China in the first two months of 2024 stood around $2.879 billion, marking a 37 percent increase compared to the same period last year, according to the data released by China Customs.
China exported $2.5 billion worth of products to Iran and imported $829 million from Iran from January to February 2024, representing a 45 percent and 20 percent year-over-year increase, respectively.
Despite all of the oppositions and hindrances, Iran-Chian relations got growing during the late Iranian President Rais’s term which led to the 25-year strategic agreement signed by the two countries. And, now, with the new President Masoud Pezeshkian taking office in Iran, eyes are on his foreign policy and the relations with such countries as China.
