 Kunming: Local and foreign companies signed trade cooperation contracts worth a total value of over 8 billion yuan (about 1.12 billion U.S. dollars) during the eighth China-South Asia Expo concluded Sunday in Kunming city of Hainan province of South China, according to the domestic and foreign trade according to the organizers.

The China-South Asia Expo acts as a key platform for businesses and commerce to connect, share ideas, and strike deals with partners.

Yunnan was a vital route of the Southern Silk Road and the Tea Route, on which the tea produced in Yunnan was transported on horseback to Tibet. The 2,300-year-old Southern Silk Road connected central China to the Middle East for centuries via India and Pakistan.

The cumulative online and offline sales exceeded 500 million yuan during the six-day trade gathering that featured 15 exhibition halls with themes including architecture technology, manufacturing, green energy and modern agriculture.

The eighth China-South Asia Expo saw participation from 82 countries, regions, and international organizations, with more than 2,000 exhibiting companies. Nearly half of these were overseas companies, covering all countries in South Asia and Southeast Asia.

China-South Asia Expo, one of the largest trade events of south Asia, was first held in Kunming in 2013, the same year China put forward the Belt and Road Initiative. Since its inception, the expo has served more than 18,000 domestic and foreign companies, promoted trade of more than 100 billion U.S. dollars, and facilitated the signing of over 3,000 projects.

China-South Asia Expo is jointly organized by the Ministry of Commerce and the Yunnan provincial government. It is one of the most important events of the year for economic and trade exchanges between China and South Asian countries.

In 2023 edition of expo, trade volume between China and South Asian countries reached nearly 200 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, twice the amount recorded in 2013, according to Official data records.

China Eastern Airlines as the strategic partner and official airline for the 8th China-South Asia Expo, made the Expo successful and memorable.
