Asia's largest carbon capture module passes reliability verification

Asia’s largest direct air capture (DAC) module “CarbonBox” has passed its reliability verification with full-load operation of hundred-tonne-scale modules, according to China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC). “CarbonBox” is China’s first DAC module which has the annual capacity to store 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2).

“CarbonBox” was developed by researchers from CEEC and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, marking the nation’s big breakthrough in direct air capture technology for CO2. 

Zhu Lijun, head of the R&D team, said that “DAC is an emerging carbon capture technology that can utilize low-carbon energy sources such as wind power, solar energy, geothermal energy, etc. It sucks CO2 out of the air and achieves negative emissions of CO2.” Zhu added that each unit of “CarbonBox” can capture over 100 tonnes of CO2 directly from the air each year, achieving a capture rate of 99 percent.

Each unit of the “CarbonBox” is the size of a shipping container, allowing modules to be directly hoisted on-site. Through standardized modular integration, the annual CO2 capture can reach millions of tonnes.

“CarbonBox” can be widely applied in areas of green methanol synthesis, green aviation fuels, and carbon services and trading.
