4 athletes make world leading performances at Diamond League in Xiamen

Two world leadings (WLs) were set and another two were matched in the Diamond League competitions in Xiamen, southeast China’s Fujian Province, on Saturday night.

Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine won the women’s high jump gold medal with 2.02 meters, setting the meet record (MR) and matching the WL of the event. Lia Apostolovski of Slovenia secured the silver with 1.92 meters while the bronze went to Eleanor Patterson of Australia (1.92 meters).

On the women’s 3,000-meter track, Beatrice Chebet from Kenya reached the line in 8:24.05, setting the MR, the ML and her personal best (PB) to win the gold. Laura Galvan (8:28.05) of Mexico and Chebet’s compatriot Margaret Akidor (8:29.88) had the silver and the bronze respectively. 10 of the 15 runners that finished the race set their PBs on Saturday. Tegab Berhe of Ethiopia didn’t finish.

“I am very happy to break my season best as well as my person best. I was the Diamond League final winner. I still feel motivated and I believe myself that I can do it. And there are a lot of fans being there to support us. I think the stadium and the audience are really good. I am also looking forward to the ensuing game,” Chebet said.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya won the men’s 800-meter gold with a match record and world leading time of 1:43.20. Silver medalist Marco Arop from Canada was 0.04 seconds behind. French runner Benjamin Robert got the bronze with 1:43.88.

In the most eye-catching men’s 100-meter race, all three medalists ran under 10 seconds. Christian Coleman of the U.S. won the gold while setting a match record and matching the world leading of 9.83 seconds. Kishane Thompson of Jamaica finished it in 9.85 seconds, his personal best, to get the silver. Fred Kerley of the U.S. had the bronze with 9.96 seconds.

Feng Bin of China won the women’s dicus throw gold medal for 67.41 meters, a meet record. She beat Sandra Perkovic of Croatia (67.32 meters, silver medalist) and Laulauga Tausaga of the U.S. (64.31 meters, bronze medalist).

“It’s an honor to win the gold medal in the major event like this at home,” Feng said. She looked forward to breaking the Asian record of the event in the Asian Games in Hangzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province later of the year.
