Japan’s top currency diplomat Kanda says recent yen moves rapid
TOKYO : Japan’s top currency diplomat Masato Kanda said on Thursday recent yen moves were rapid, and that authorities would not rule out any steps to respond to disorderly exchange-rate moves.
“We are always prepared to respond to any situation,” he told reporters, adding that excessive currency volatility could affect the economy.
Kanda’s comment came as the yen weakened past 153 per dollar, the lowest since 1990, following Wednesday’s release of strong U.S. inflation data.
Kanda said he would not comment on whether the yen’s overnight moves were deemed excessively volatile.
