ICESCO, OSBU launch Green Media Declaration and Mediathon Competition during COP16 in Riyadh
Riyadh, Dec. 5 (BNA): The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and OIC States Broadcasting Union (OSBU) launched (green media) declaration which aims at putting a strategic framework to boost the role of media in spreading environmental awareness and facing climate change problems.
The declaration comes within the framework of a bilateral initiative from ICESCO General Director Salim al Malik and USBO Chairman Amr el-Leithy within the framework of COP16 held in Riyadh.
The declaration coincides with Mediathon Competition which aims at environmental culture as it targets content creators and creative youth to innovate media thoughts that shed light on climate change issues, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.
The competition also gives an opportunity to develop media projects by using digital mechanisms and modern means to promote the dialogue on sustainability.
The ICESCO and OSBU urged young media men to effectively participate in these initiatives, reiterating the importance to unify efforts to achieve sustainable development via specialized creative media.
In a joint statement, the ICESCO and OSBU expressed their commitment to support media as a main tool to face global environmental challenges and boost partnerships for more sustainable development in the OIC member states and the whole world.
Leithy said that facing climate change and boosting sustainable development are very pressing causes in this era.
COP29 represents a lighting point in the international efforts to handle climate crisis in addition to combating desertification, Leithy said, asserting the necessity of investing in sustainable solutions.
He pointed out that COP16, held in Riyadh, tackles the issues of desertification and losing earth.
Desertification is part and parcel from the climate efforts, he said.
Leithy pointed out to the role of the (green media) in spreading scientific knowledge as its contributes to simplifying scientific concepts on climate change to be understandable and effective, boosting societal responsibility, affecting decision makers, building international partnerships as it is a platform for boosting cooperation between Islamic states and the world to achieve the joint goals in the field of climate action.
The OSBU is working on confirming dedicating all media platforms to the serve climate problems, he said.
