Beijing is planning a 3,000-square-kilometer autonomous driving demonstration zone between the fourth and sixth ring roads, accounting for almost a fifth of Beijing Municipality’s total land area, Xinhua News Agency reports, per information from the World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference concluded in the city on Saturday.
The city has completed the deployment of intelligent roadside facilities within the high-level autonomous driving demonstration zone, which was planned as the country’s first for 600 square kilometers in 2020, according to the website of the Beijing economic-technological development area.
The demonstration zone has attracted leading companies such as Baidu, Pony.ai, WeRide, Neolix and JD.com, facilitating comprehensive demonstrations and collaborative development across eight application scenarios, including smart connected passenger vehicles, unmanned delivery, autonomous patrols, trunk logistics and automated sanitation.
To date, the zone has issued road testing licenses to 33 testing companies and nearly 900 vehicles, with autonomous driving testing mileage exceeding 32 million kilometers, accounting for more than a quarter of the country’s total.
Additionally, automated shuttle testing has been launched at Beijing Daxing International Airport, Beijing South Station and Yizhuang Station, while the Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Expressway now fully supports autonomous trunk logistics scenarios.
Beijing is also planning on the legislation of regulations on autonomous vehicles, according to Xinhua.
