Shura Member highlights Bahrain’s commitment to disability rights at IPU session on armed conflict
Geneva, Oct. 16 (BNA): Dalal Jassim Al Zayed, Member of Shura Council and Member of the Committee to Promote Respect for International Humanitarian Law at the Inter – Parliamentary Union (IPU), participated in the open session of the committee held as part of the 149th IPU General Assembly in Switzerland.
The session focused on the theme “Armed conflict and disability: Enhancing parliamentary action to address disability during armed conflicts and their aftermath.”
Al Zayed emphasised Bahrain’s commitment to promoting the human rights of persons with disabilities, improving their quality of life, and prioritising their rights as a national objective. She attributed the continuous support from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
During the session, Al Zayed highlighted Bahrain’s advocacy for coexistence, peace, and the rejection of escalating conflicts and wars. She stressed the importance of protecting the rights of victims of armed conflicts, especially those who become persons with disabilities, and ensuring their access to basic rights as outlined by international humanitarian principles.
She urged parliamentarians to promote diplomacy and dialogue as tools for resolving conflicts, proposing that the committee develop a guide outlining the rights of persons with disabilities, how to claim those rights, and providing legal assistance to improve their living conditions.
Al Zayed also called for the provision of necessary equipment and support for persons with disabilities and their families, encouraging human rights organisations to offer continuous legal and psychological assistance.
