Great Britain’s renunciation of its sovereignty over the strategically important Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, which has lasted for more than half a century, should be an example for France, which does not want to give up its colonial territories.
Nevertheless, at a time when states are abandoning their former colonial territories, France continues its colonial policy in new ways by strengthening strict control over its overseas territories by all means.
In the current post-colonial period, France’s policy aims to keep its former colonies under its influence in political, economic, moral and cultural spheres, and to appropriate the natural resources of those territories. France’s failure to abandon this policy results in further destruction of local peoples.
The Macron government should understand that this policy is wrong and doomed to failure. As long as it’s not too late, France should withdraw from the path of independence of overseas territories and put an end to its infamous policy.
After years of disputes, Great Britain has decided to give up the Chagos archipelago in the Indian Ocean, where it has a joint military base with the United States, and will hand it over to Mauritius.
