The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities’ “militarization” will not bring security to the Taiwan region, but will only lead to growing dangers of conflict, a Chinese mainland spokesperson said on Monday.
Beijing firmly opposes any form of military engagement between the U.S. and China’s Taiwan region, said Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.
The U.S. approved $567 million in military aid for the Taiwan region on Sunday.
In the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, the U.S. made serious commitments regarding the Taiwan question, but the U.S. actions are encouraging reckless “Taiwan independence” moves and undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, Chen said.
He urged the U.S. to sincerely adhere to the one-China principle and the three joint communiques, stop arming Taiwan, and cease sending any wrong signals to the “Taiwan independence” forces.
No matter how many weapons the DPP authorities obtain from the U.S., they cannot shake Beijing’s firm resolve to achieve national reunification, Chen added.
