Chart of the Day: 60 years of China-Central African Republic relations

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Central African Republic. Over the past 60 years, the two countries have deepened cooperation in various fields, including trade and investment.

China and the Central African Republic established formal diplomatic relations on September 29, 1964. In June 2016, a China-aided solar demonstration project was completed in Bangui. In March 2018, the China-funded reconstruction of the Sapeke Bridge was finished in Bangui. In March 2023, the China-constructed Sakai Solar Plant project, the Central African Republic’s first photovoltaic power plant, was completed.

China has expanded bilateral trade with the Central African Republic, with total trade in goods increasing from $36 million in 2014 to $83 million in 2023. Last year, China’s exports to the Central African Republic, mainly mechanical and electrical products, stood at $55 million. China’s imports from the Central African Republic, mainly logs and sawn timber, reached $29 million.
