Gateway of Time: Urban China by numbers in the 1990s

CGTN will soon launch The Gateway of Time, an AR experience that takes you through China’s 75-year transformation, all within the homes of its people – from a farmer’s home in the 1950s to an urban factory worker’s home in the 1990s, and finally, a modern urban household.

In each scene, we provide data from that specific era within the full 75-year picture to give you a broader understanding of life during those times.

In the second scene, we enter a 1990s urban worker’s home, a time of rapid urbanization driven by economic reforms.

Alongside this shift, the Engel coefficient of urban residents dropped, indicating rising living standards. People spent less on food and more on other goods, showcasing China’s rapid urban and economic development during this transformative decade.
