Ombudsman says Estonian can’t return to homeland from Kyrgyzstan for more than 30 years

AKIPRESS.COM – Ombudsman of Kyrgyzstan Jamilya Jamanbayeva called on officials of the country to pay a special attention to ensuring respect for the rights of persons left without identity documents.

A 50-year-old Estonian man G.Y. asked the Ombudsman to help get the citizenship of Kyrgyzstan, the press service of the Ombudsman said.

The man has lived in Kyrgyzstan since 1992. He arrived to Kyrgyzstan from Estonia with the USSR passport, which he soon lost, and he could not return to his homeland. He tried to recover his documents for years.

His attempts to restore the documents through the Embassy of Estonia gave no results.

Now the man lives in the village of Kyzyl-Suu, Issyk-Kul region. The Estonian today wants to obtain the citizenship of Kyrgyzstan.

The Institute of Ombudsman has sent a letter to the Embassy of Estonia in Kazakhstan with the request to assist in getting birth certificate of G.Y. to get a citizenship of Kyrgyzstan.

The Institute also appealed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan and sent a letter to the government bodies of Estonia.

During the talks with representatives of the Estonian Embassy, G.Y. admitted that he wants to get the citizenship of Kyrgyzstan, but he needs his birth certificate for this.
Authorities of Estonia are checking the information about G.Y., the Ombudsman Institute said.
