The value of Iran’s potato exports reached $52 million during the first five months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20 to August 21), according to a report from the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA).
The report highlighted that potatoes ranked as the fifth most exported agricultural product in the country for the mentioned period.
Iran’s agricultural exports have seen a notable rise this year, with the overall value of agricultural products exported in the first five months reaching $1.453 billion. This represents a 33% increase in value compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the weight of exported goods climbed by 22%, totaling 2.657 million tons during this period.
The growth in Iran’s agricultural sector exports reflects a broader trend of increasing non-oil trade. Potatoes, in particular, have emerged as a key export crop for the country, with demand rising from neighboring countries.
Iraq remains the top destination for Iranian agricultural exports. The country imported $1.986 billion worth of agro-food products in the previous Iranian year (ended March 19), accounting for 31.5% of the total exports in this sector. The United Arab Emirates ranked second with $751 million in imports, followed by Russia with $521.5 million.
The significant growth in agricultural exports, including potatoes, underscores Iran’s efforts to diversify its economy by boosting non-oil trade. Agro-food products now account for 12.8% of Iran’s total non-oil exports.
