Iran launches drilling of 35 infill wells to boost output at South Pars gas field
Iran has commenced drilling operations for the first phase of a major project aimed at maintaining gas production at the South Pars gas field, located in the Persian Gulf and shared with Qatar.
Mohammad Hossein Motejalli, CEO of Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) announced that the project, managed by Petropars subsidiary POSCO, involves drilling 35 infill wells across 17 platforms over the next three years.
The initial phase includes drilling eight wells at four platforms (SPQ1, SPD4, SPD5, and SPD6). With the completion of these wells, an additional 7 million cubic meters of gas per day will be added to South Pars’ production capacity.
The overall goal of the project is to increase daily gas output by 36 million cubic meters by 2025, Motejalli said.
The official further emphasized that this effort is part of a larger strategy to address declining pressure in the field and stabilize gas supply.
The South Pars gas field, which accounts for approximately 70% of Iran’s gas production, is critical to meeting domestic energy demands.
This project also highlights Iran’s reliance on domestic contractors, with the involvement of skilled local companies expected to boost employment and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
