The Chinese nominee was successfully elected as the Chair of the APEC Energy Working Group for the 2025-2026 term during the recently concluded 68th meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Working Group, according to a statement by China’s National Energy Administration on Saturday.
This election marks the first time China has successfully run for a leadership position within the APEC energy cooperation mechanism. The administration stated that the success demonstrates the recognition of China’s energy development achievements by APEC member economies and is a significant indicator of China’s deep involvement in global energy governance.
It also showcases China’s unwavering commitment to advancing energy transformation, expanding high-level opening up, and actively sharing development opportunities with the world, the administration said.
China has promised to reach carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. In recent years, it has accelerated the development of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system, achieving historic accomplishments in the energy sector. At the same time, China has continued to advance global energy governance reforms, promoting the establishment of global clean energy partnerships, forming the “Belt and Road” energy partnership, and advocating for an international energy transformation alliance.
China pledged to use this election as an opportunity to promote constructive and positive dialogue, ensuring that the development direction of the Energy Working Group aligns with the instructions of APEC leaders, ministers and senior officials. Furthermore, China aims to strengthen collaboration with all member economies, promote regional sustainable development, and contribute Chinese wisdom, Chinese solutions, and Chinese strength to the construction of a community with a shared future in the Asia-Pacific.
The APEC Energy Working Group was established in 1990. It’s one of the 14 specialized working groups under the APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting Steering Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation. The working group serves as a multilateral cooperation framework for the energy sector among APEC’s 21 member economies, aiming to promote energy cooperation in the APEC region and contribute to the economic prosperity and social well-being of the people in the APEC region.
