Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday called for more efforts to deepen the building of a community with a shared future among Lancang-Mekong countries.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks at the ninth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

He hailed the six countries – Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam – as “natural partners and friendly neighbors forever.”

The countries should focus on peace and stability and adhere to their common aspirations in the LMC cooperation, said Wang.

“We should adhere to genuine multilateralism and open regionalism, resolutely oppose zero-sum game or ‘decoupling,’ and work together to build a Lancang-Mekong home where we share weal and woe, and stand in unity and solidarity,” he said.

Following the concept of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, the countries should intensify joint efforts to crack down on cross-border crime and safeguard regional stability and tranquility, he added.

Wang also proposed to make more efforts in promoting innovation-driven development to bridge the artificial intelligence gap, improving interconnectivity to enhance growth momentum, and promoting cultural and people-to-people exchanges among the countries.
