China's sports industry on fast track of development

Today marks China’s 16th National Fitness Day, an annual event that reflects the nation’s commitment to mass sports and public health and honors the legacy of the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics.

Policies and measures taken by the Chinese government in promoting national fitness have put China’s sports industry on the fast track of development.

According to the National Fitness Plan for the sports sector in the 2021-2025 period released by the State Council, the total production value of China’s sports industry is expected to reach 5 trillion yuan ($697 billion) by 2025, with sports consumption exceeding 2.8 trillion yuan.

As of the end of 2023, the number of sports venues reached 4,592,700 nationwide, with the per capita sports venue area at 2.89 square meters, according to data from the General Administration of Sport of China.

Over the past year, the number of free or subsidized public sports stadiums and gymnasiums nationwide stood at 2,491, with total area of over 20 million square meters, benefiting over 400 million people.
