China's Zou Jingyuan wins historic Olympic gold on parallel bars

China’s Zou Jingyuan made history by becoming the first athlete since 1976 to secure consecutive gold medals in the men’s parallel bars at the Olympics, after the 26-year-old impressed with a final score of 16.200 points.

Ukraine’s Illia Kovtun claimed silver with a score of 15.500, earning his nation’s first gymnastics medal since 2016. The bronze went to Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka, as the men’s all-around champion earned his maiden parallel bars medal with 15.300 points.

Zou’s compatriot Zhang Boheng narrowly missed the podium, finishing in fourth place.

Zou’s victory marks the 21st gold for the Chinese delegation at the Paris Summer Olympics, and the second for the country’s gymnastics team in the French capital.
