19 cases of meningitis registered in Bishkek in six months
AKIPRESS.COM – 19 cases of meningococcal infection were reported in Bishkek over the past six months, according to Kuban Kundashev, chief physician of the Bishkek State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance Center.
The WHO reports at least 500,000 cases globally each year, with about 50,000 being fatal. Survivors may face long-term effects like hearing loss, seizures, and limb weakness. Meningococcal infection is highly dangerous, with transmission occurring through airborne droplets from infected individuals.
Analysis shows cyclical peaks in meningitis every 8 years, with declines since 2016. Most cases occur from December to May. The first half of 2024 saw a decrease in cases by 2.3 times compared to 2023.
In worsening situations with dangerous diseases, emergency measures are taken, including additional 50% payments to medical staff for work outside regular hours, as coordinated with the Cabinet of Ministers.
