Tokyaev denies pardon to former Chairman of National Security Committee Karim Masimov – media
AKIPRESS.COM – President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev agreed that former Chairman of the National Security Committee Karim Masimov, convicted of high treason and attempt to seize power, should be denied pardon, the Presidential Administration said in response to a request from Informburo.kz.
Masimov’s petition for pardon was considered by the Commission on Pardons under the President of Kazakhstan on June 27.
“After studying Masimov’s appeal, the commission made a corresponding proposal to the head of state, with which he agreed,” the Presidential Administration noted.
Masimov has already been informed about the decision.
Chairman of the Commission on Pardons Marat Bashimov earlier reported that Karim Masimov, convicted of high treason and an attempt to seize power, was denied a pardon.
Karim Masimov was detained during the January 2022 unrest. The criminal case against him was classified as “top secret.” A court in Astana sentenced Karim Masimov to 18 years in prison for high treason, attempted violent seizure of power, abuse of power and authority at the end of April 2023. He tried to challenge the sentence, but the appellate court left the sentence unchanged.
