The opening of a new electric vehicle assembly plant in Thailand marks its first international facility outside of China, a pivotal strategic advancement in the Southeast Asian automotive sector.

Officials said: “By adopting the same technologies from its factory in Panyu district, Guangzhou, which has been selected as the world’s only “lighthouse factory” for new energy vehicle (EV) production, the factory aims to support Thailand’s EV production targets and empower the country’s role as an EV hub in Southeast Asia”.

Factory’s current annual production capacity is 50,000 units, which will be expanded to 100,000 in the future, allowing for the production of various models, including the second-generation Aion V, Aion Y Plus, and Hyper HT.

The factory is a highly intelligent plant which applies new technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things to achieve more efficient production of multiple models.

Responding over the inauguration of EV facility, Thailand’s Minister of Industry Pimphattra Wichaikul said that the operation of a new EV factory will promote the transformation of Thailand’s automotive industry and help the Southeast Asian country realize its vision of becoming a regional and global EV production hub.

“The EV production factory will continue to improve the construction of charging facilities and energy ecosystems in Thailand, and coordinate the upstream and downstream development of the industry chain”, minister added.

“GAC will bring its cutting-edge technology to Thai consumers, introducing a steady supply of models. More importantly, we will continue to upgrade the EV industrial capacity in Thailand and help to train local professionals, aiming to benefit Thai people and related industries through localization,” said, Zeng Qinghong, chairman of GAC Group.

Ma Haiyang, general manager of Aion Southeast Asia in his remarks said “Aion, a GAC subsidiary launched an intelligent factory, featuring photovoltaic energy storage and charging integration, and is Thailand’s first such factory”.

With the expansion of BRI cooperation, GAC Group operates with automobile sales and after-sales services in 68 countries and regions of the world.
