Abdel Ati to German FM: Current regional conditions prove Egypt’s pivotal role
CAIRO – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Ati asserted that the current regional conditions proved Egypt’s pivotal role saying the country’s stability as well as its support at the political and economic levels is vital for maintaining regional stability.
He made the remarks during a phone call on Wednesday with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock who congratulated Abdel Ati for assuming his new post.
Abdel Ati underlined the importance of rallying up efforts to settle regional crises in light of the leverage of Egypt in the region and Germany in Europe and the international arena.
He added that Egypt highly appreciates relations with Germany which supports development in Egypt, especially the important role of German companies in Egypt, especially in national projects.
Abdel Ati said Egypt is looking forward to Germany’s support to further ties with the EU in order to build on the achievements of the Egypt-EU Investment Conference which was held in June.
Meanwhile, Abdel Ati reviewed Egypt’s efforts to support negotiations to cease fire in the Gaza Strip, underlining the importance of pressing the Israeli government for full implementation of the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council on halting the war and delivering humanitarian aid.
He asserted the importance of Germany’s continued support to UNRWA.
For her part, the German foreign minister underlined the importance of the Middle East stability for her country, voicing appreciation of the current cooperation with Egypt in this regard.
She asserted interest in the humanitarian file in Gaza, voicing deep appreciation to Egypt’s efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza.
She said Germany is ready to support Egypt’s efforts in this regard.
As for the situation in Sudan, Abdel Ati referred to Egypt’s hosting of the conference of the Sudanese political and civilian powers.
Egypt has for the first time brought together Sudanese parties since the outbreak of the Sudanese conflict to exchange views, he said.
He warned of the gravity of further escalation in the humanitarian situation in Sudan and increasing number of refugees.
He noted that Egypt is exerting strenuous efforts to alleviate humanitarian suffering of the Sudanese people.
The two sides agreed on continued coordination and consultation in the coming period between Egypt and Germany on means of settling the simmering regional conflicts.
