LTA enforcement officer killed in pursuit of fleeing motorcyclist along SLE

SINGAPORE: A Land Transport Authority (LTA) enforcement officer was killed after chasing a fleeing motorcyclist on the Seletar Expressway (SLE) on Tuesday (Jun 4) morning.

In response to CNA’s queries, the police said they were alerted to the accident involving a motorcycle, two lorries and a van on SLE towards Bukit Timah Expressway, near the Tampines Expressway exit, at about 10.40am.

“An LTA enforcement officer, who was riding the motorcycle, was conveyed to the hospital where he subsequently passed away,” said the police.

An 18-year-old man, believed to be the rider the officer was pursuing before the accident, was arrested for multiple offences: Failing to stop when ordered by an authorised officer, dangerous driving, riding without a valid licence and insurance coverage, possession of scheduled weapons, and suspected drug-related activities.

LTA identified the enforcement officer as Mr Zdulfika Ahakasah.

“The Land Transport Authority is deeply saddened that LTA enforcement officer Mr Zdulfika Ahakasah passed on in a fatal accident this morning. He is a valued member of our enforcement team,” LTA said in response to CNA’s queries.

Videos of the accident on social media show Mr Zdulfika nearly coming to a stop beside the motorcyclist on the road shoulder.

But the motorcyclist suddenly speeds away, veering right to head for the expressway exit. Mr Zdulfika gives chase, but crashes into a road divider.

LTA said it is working with the Traffic Police to “thoroughly investigate the incident, and bring the motorcyclist involved to justice”.

“We are in contact with his family to extend our condolences and full support during this difficult time,” it said.

The commander of Traffic Police, Senior Assistant Commissioner Daniel Tan, said: “This was a tragic loss of life of a fellow law enforcer who died while executing his duty to keep our roads safe.

“The police will investigate this matter thoroughly, and ensure that those responsible will face the full brunt of the law.”
