Chinese President Xi Jinping left Beijing on Tuesday for the U.S. city of San Francisco to attend a China-U.S. summit and the 30th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting from November 14 to 17, at the invitation of U.S. President Joe Biden.

Xi’s meeting with Biden will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since their meeting ahead of the Group of 20 summit in Indonesia’s Bali last year.

The two heads of state will have in-depth discussions on issues of strategic, overarching and fundamental importance in shaping China-U.S. relations and major issues concerning world peace and development, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said last week.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of APEC’s first leaders’ meeting, Xi’s trip to APEC reflects the great importance China attaches to Asia-Pacific economic cooperation, the spokesperson said, noting that Xi will deliver a speech at the meeting to fully elaborate China’s major propositions on deepening Asia-Pacific cooperation and driving regional and global growth.

Xi’s entourage includes Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, and Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and foreign minister.
