Beyond the Ballon d’Or: The enduring greatness of an ‘ordinary’ Messi

Lionel Messi’s prodigious impact on the pitch is juxtaposed with his understated and modest nature off it, creating an intriguing sense of him being on the periphery at times. That’s precisely why, when he was bestowed with his eighth Ballon d’Or during a glamorous ceremony in Paris on Monday night, he appeared visibly shy and somewhat bewildered. 

“I couldn’t imagine having the career that I’ve had,” the 36-year-old said on stage. “Everything that I’ve achieved. The fortune I’ve had playing for the best team in the world, the best team in history. It’s nice to be here once more to enjoy this moment.” 

Certainly, the Ballon d’Or holds the distinction of recognizing the pinnacle of football excellence, as it is determined through the votes of 100 journalists from across the globe. Undoubtedly, Messi was justly rewarded for his sensational performances during last year’s World Cup in Qatar, where he led Argentina to victory with his phenomenal display, scoring a stunning seven goals and earning the title of the tournament’s best player. 

However, even with these extraordinary achievements, Messi still maintains the perspective that his actions are not something out of the ordinary. This endearing reaction only added to the allure of his character, resonating with hundreds of millions of fans worldwide.  

Born to humble beginnings in a poor neighborhood in Rosario, Messi was a scrawny urchin who hardly seemed destined for superstardom. His enduring presence in the football world often obscures the arduous journey he undertook to reach his current status. While his astounding talents may appear heaven-sent, they required a lifetime of dedicated cultivation.  

Messi’s first Ballon d’Or triumph came in 2009 during his stint at Barcelona. His most recent victory in 2023 is a testament to his unwavering brilliance spanning nearly two decades. Surpassing all others, Messi now holds an impressive tally of eight Ballon d’Or awards, with Cristiano Ronaldo trailing behind at five, his most recent win occurring in 2017. 

Notably, Ronaldo did not even make the 30-man shortlist this year, serving as a resounding indication that the debate over the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) has, in essence, reached its definitive conclusion.

Nevertheless, the true essence of Messi’s greatness resides in his mind-boggling capacity to keep his feet on the ground, even amid unparalleled success and tremendous pressure within elite football.

Despite being subjected to relentless fouls on the pitch, he remains composed and never succumbs to disciplinary issues. Not once has he resorted to speaking ill of his teammates, opponents, coaches, or clubs. His extensive charity work, although significant, is carried out without any need for self-promotion.  

One of the most influential person on earth, he has refrained from indulging in lengthy preaching about his opinions on the style of football modern teams should adopt or delving into the realms of politics and social issues.  

Moreover, his personal life exemplifies his grounded nature, as he is happily married to his childhood crush and raises three sons, all while steering clear of any major scandals.

While it is undeniable that Messi has consistently mesmerized audiences and effortlessly dominated the world’s best teams with his peerless talent over the past two decades, his distinction as a role model extends far beyond his football prowess. 

In a world teeming with self-pretenders, pretenders and narcissists, Messi’s genuine humility truly sets him apart. He has consistently conveyed the impression that he remains blissfully unaware of his own greatness. 

As he aptly stated in a 2012 interview, “I am more worried about being a good person than being the best football player in the world. When I retire, I hope I am remembered for being a decent guy.”
