China urges implementation of UNGA’s resolution on Palestinian issue

The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday said China hopes that the resolution that calls for humanitarian truce in Gaza, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), will be fully implemented, and regional peace and stability will be restored at an early date.

The UNGA adopted a resolution that calls for “an immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities” in Gaza. China voted in favor of the resolution.

In response at a daily press briefing, Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the ministry, said the resolution reaffirms that a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be achieved by peaceful means, based on the relevant UN resolutions and in accordance with international law, and on the basis of the “two-state solution.”

Since the escalation of the conflict, China has been calling for a ceasefire, protecting civilians and opening up humanitarian relief corridors to avoid greater humanitarian disasters, playing a constructive role in promoting a just and lasting solution to the conflict, Wang said.

The UNGA passed the resolution with a overwhelming majority of votes, which reflects the strong call of the international community for a ceasefire, he said, adding that China hopes the humanitarian situation will be alleviated as soon as possible and the safety of civilians will be effectively guaranteed.

When asked whether Zhai Jun, special envoy of the Chinese government on Middle East issues, will hold meetings this week involving the regional issue, Wang said China has carried out intensive communication with relevant parties and participated in the consultations of the UN Security Council to promote peace talks for an end to hostilities.

The international community, especially the Arab countries, speaks highly of China’s just stance and important role in promoting the political settlement of the conflict, as well as maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East, Wang added.

China will firmly support every action conducive to promoting dialogue, achieving ceasefire and restoring peace, Wang said, calling for acts that help implement the “two-state solution” and promote a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
