Chinese President Xi Jinping met with President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso on Thursday in Beijing.

Sassou Nguesso is in the Chinese capital for the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF), which concluded on Wednesday.

While meeting with Sassou Nguesso, Xi said, “More than a month ago, President Sassou Nguesso and I attended the China-Africa Leaders’ Dialogue in South Africa. You attended the third BRF on invitation, which fully shows the importance that the Republic of the Congo attaches to the development of relations between the two countries and its strong support for Belt and Road cooperation. I appreciate this.”

“This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The Republic of the Congo is an active participant and an important partner,” said Xi. “We’ve acted on the Silk Road spirit of peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and mutual benefit, promoted friendly exchange and cooperation, and achieved concrete results.”

“A series of projects, such as the No. 1 National Highway, the Sino-Congolese Bank for Africa, and the business center in Brazzaville, have been successfully implemented, which are exemplary,” he said.

The Republic of the Congo will host the Three Basins Summit in a few days. Xi wished the summit a full success.

“President Sassou Nguesso attaches great importance to environmental protection and actively advocates for addressing climate change, which I highly appreciate. Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets, and green development is also the foundation for Belt and Road cooperation,” Xi said. “We are willing to work with all parties, including the Republic of the Congo, to deepen green cooperation and protect the Earth – our common home.”
