A group of experts and scholars gathered for a seminar on technology development and human rights on Wednesday in Geneva, Switzerland, focusing on new concepts and developments in human rights protection in the era of smart technology.
The experts hailed China’s positive role in promoting technological innovation and developments in human rights protection, noting that it is necessary to promote innovation in human rights concepts and to ensure that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and biotechnology will bring benefits rather than risks to the world.
“Science and technology are closely linked to human rights. China has always attached great importance to technological innovation, adhered to the concept that the results of scientific and technological development should be used to enhance human well-being, and strived to provide Chinese solutions for the international governance of scientific and technological human rights,” said professor Bao Liying from the Beijing Institute of Technology.
At present, many so-called serious media in Western countries are accustomed to looking at China’s all-round development and great achievements in human rights protection with tinted glasses and are blinded by ideological bias, said British professor of international law Anthony Carty, adding that through systematic research, it can be found that there is the influence and role of Western governments behind this.
“In today’s iterative development of smart technology, China has established a system of principles and rules for smart technology for social good, providing a bottom line for the development of intelligent technology and offering the goal for its development, said professor of international law Li Shouping.
Sponsored by the China Society for Human Rights Studies and co-hosted by the Center for Sci&Tech and Human Rights Studies at the Beijing Institute of Technology, the meeting is one of the side events during the ongoing 54th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
