Premier Li urges opposition to ‘politicizing’ economic cooperation

China and Britain are both advocates, practitioners and beneficiaries of free trade, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said on Sunday, emphasizing that the two sides should “jointly oppose mixing trade and economic cooperation with politics and security.”

China and Britain should jointly promote the building of an open world economy, uphold the multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core and ensure the stability and smooth flow of global industrial and supply chains, said Li when meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of the G20 summit.

Li said that China and Britain should properly handle disagreements, respect each other’s core interests and major concerns.

For his part, Sunak said that UK attaches great importance to the role China plays in the international system, adding that the UK side is willing to engage in constructive dialogues with the Chinese side, strengthen pragmatic cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, science and technology.
