China reiterated on Tuesday that its import ban on Japan’s aquatic products is fully legitimate, reasonable and necessary.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks after Japan’s government said it has submitted a document to the World Trade Organization protesting China’s import ban.
Since humanity began using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, there has been neither any precedent nor universally recognized standards for discharging nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean, Mao said.
The international community is concerned about the risks to the marine environment and public safety posed by Japan’s move and has taken preventive measures, she noted.
Shortly after Japan started releasing nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean on August 24, China’s General Administration of Customs announced to suspend all import of aquatic products originating in Japan.
